What is the Boyle Heights Historical Society?

Our mission is to engage the public’s interest to collect, preserve, appreciate and share knowledge relevant to the diverse social, ethnic, cultural, geographic and architectural heritage of the Los Angeles neighborhood of Boyle Heights, which was founded in the 1870s.

We are a group of past and current residents of Boyle Heights who formed this organization in 2005. We met at various historical locations in the community, sharing information about its rich and dynamic history. Some of our first gatherings were held at the Santa Fe Hospital where we hosted the Associated Historical Societies of Los Angeles County (AHSLAC) conference.

We toured and met at the Neighborhood Music School, Hollenbeck Palms and the Hollenbeck Recreation Center on the anniversary of John Edward Hollenbeck’s birthday! As we toured the park grounds and walked along Boyle Avenue we shared the early history of the William H. Workman and his family and Mr. and Mrs. Hollenbeck. Both of these families believed the community needed a peaceful and beautiful place to relax and enjoy. So that beauty may prevail, they gave large portions of their property to the City of Los Angeles for the public to enjoy this peaceful lake and green space known as Hollenbeck Park.

The descendants of the founding families serve on our Advisory Board as well as alumni from Roosevelt High School, professors, historians and past residents.

In the past nineteen years we have learned so much. We hope you will be joining us soon and we look forward to meeting you and hearing your family history and stories.

We thank our supporters, members, sponsors and all of you who believe in our mission and the importance of having an historical society for this community.

The Boyle Heights Historical Society is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization.
